Eight ways to run a school, explained in plain language

Every school runs on a set of beliefs about how kids learn. Here's what each one looks like day to day, and who it tends to fit.

Traditional A structured approach emphasizing academic excellence, discipline, and preparation for success in established systems. Kids sit in same-age classes and move through set subjects on a schedule. The teacher leads instruction, assigns homework, and grades tests. Report cards and standardized benchmarks track progress.
Classical Education grounded in the trivium (grammar, logic, rhetoric) with emphasis on virtue, wisdom, and great books. Younger kids memorize and recite (grammar stage), middle schoolers learn to argue and reason (logic stage), and older students write and speak persuasively (rhetoric stage). Expect Latin, history in chronological order, and lots of great books.
Montessori Child-led learning in prepared environments where students choose activities and learn through hands-on exploration. Mixed-age classrooms (often 3-year spans) with long, uninterrupted work periods. Kids choose from hands-on materials on low shelves while the guide observes and gives small lessons one-on-one or in small groups.
Charlotte Mason A philosophy valuing the whole child through living books, nature study, and respect for the student as a person. Short, focused lessons in the morning using "living books" written by passionate authors instead of textbooks. Kids narrate back what they learned. Afternoons are for nature walks, art, music, and handicrafts.
Reggio Emilia Project-based learning that views children as capable researchers, emphasizing creativity and community collaboration. Teachers follow the kids' questions into long projects that can run for weeks. Classrooms are full of natural materials, light, and art supplies, and teachers document learning with photos and kids' own words.
Waldorf A holistic approach that develops thinking, feeling, and willing through arts integration and developmental stages. A strong daily rhythm with a long "main lesson" block each morning. Lots of art, music, movement, handwork, and storytelling. Formal reading usually starts around age 7, and screens are kept out of the early grades.
Unschooling Child-directed learning that follows natural curiosity and interests without formal curriculum or structure. No set curriculum. Kids spend their days on whatever interests them, with adults as resources and mentors. In school form this often looks like a Sudbury school or an Agile Learning Center where kids help run the community.
Acton Academy A learner-driven approach where students take ownership of their education through real-world challenges and Socratic discussion. Mixed-age studios where kids set weekly goals, work through core skills at their own pace with adaptive tools, and spend afternoons on hands-on "quests." Guides ask questions instead of giving answers, and kids earn badges and present work in exhibitions.
